Texas is one of the top states for beer consumption, a 24/7 Wall St. analysis shows.

Data from the Beer Institute found that Texas ranks No. 2 for total consumption, with 604.96 million gallons sold last year, 24/7 Wall St., a financial news organization, reports. The state is tied for No. 8 in per capita consumption, with 34.6 gallons purchased per resident of legal age.

However, only 54.3 percent of adult Texans surveyed last year had consumed alcohol in the preceding 30 days, compared to 57.1 percent nationwide, 24/7 Wall St. reports.

Like many other states in the top 10 list, Texas has a relatively low tax on alcohol compared to its surrounding states, which could drive beer purchases, 24/7 Wall St. reports.

Meanwhile, beer consumption in Texas has dropped in recent years.

Between 2003 and 2011, consumption declined 9.4 percent, ranking Texas at the 15th-lowest spot for percent change, 24/7 Wall St. reports.

Consumption has dropped nationwide, too, 24/7 Wall St. reports.
