AM General, Lockheed, Oshkosh to work on Humvee replacement

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Army and Marine Corps on Wednesday awarded Humvee maker AM General as well as Lockheed Martin Corp and Oshkosh Corp contracts valued at $56 million to $66 million to work on prototypes for a new truck to replace the workhorse Humvee.

The multibillion-dollar Humvee-replacement program is one of few new development programs available to U.S. companies as the Pentagon prepares for up to $1 trillion in cuts to planned spending over the next decade.

Lockheed, privately held AM General and Oshkosh beat out Navistar International Corp , General Dynamics Corp , and Britain's BAE Systems , who had also bid for the 27-month Joint Light Tactical Vehicle development contracts.

The decision by the two military services, posted late Wednesday on a government contracting site, foresees initial funding of $99.5 million on the program, with the remaining funds to be spent in fiscal years 2013 and 2014. The Army issued a request for proposals on January 26 for the program.

AM General, which had previously been teamed with General Dynamics, and Oshkosh had entered the competition only in March, along with Navistar, which was initially part of a team with BAE Systems.

AM General's overall contract was valued at $64.5 million; Lockheed's was valued at $66.3 million and Oshkosh -- which also built a mine-resistant, all-terrain vehicle for the military's use in Afghanistan, was valued at $56.4 million.

Current plans call for the Army to buy up to 50,000 of the new vehicles, with the Marines set to buy 5,000 more.

AM General welcomed the announcement, saying it would produce 22 prototypes of its "Blast Resistant Vehicle - Off road" or BRV-O, which it said was based on over a decade of the company's investment in research, development and testing.

Navistar said it was disappointed by the news, but said there could be an opportunity to compete for a production contract once the engineering and manufacturing development phase was completed. A spokeswoman said she was not aware of any plans by the company to protest the government's decision.

No immediate comment was available from the other companies.

The Army's announcement on Wednesday said the losing bidders could proceed to develop vehicles at their own cost and risk, but needed to let the government know of any such plans within 30 days.

Britons shrug off nude photos of UK's Prince Harry

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's Prince Harry has been caught on camera doing something embarrassing ? again.

Celebrity gossip website TMZ on Tuesday posted photos of the 27-year-old royal cavorting nude with an unidentified woman in a VIP suite in Las Vegas. It's hardly the first time the prince ? who allegedly disrobed as part of a game of strip pool ? has been filmed in a compromising situation. The third-in-line to the throne was famously photographed wearing a Nazi uniform for a costume party, and in another photo-gaffe he was seen cupping the breast of a female TV presenter. Some would argue footage in which he was heard to utter a racial slur while teasing a fellow army cadet from Pakistan was more serious.

If the reaction of Britons to Harry's Las Vegas adventure was anything to go by, the nude photos will do little to tarnish his generally positive, party-prince image. The Associated Press asked an assortment of royal watchers and British subjects about what they thought about the prince's naked romp.

DID HARRY DO ANYTHING WRONG?

Jim Conlon, a 60-year-old construction worker: "The answer to that is categorically NO." Conlon, who was unloading bags of material from a car, seemed genuinely offended by the very question. "I'd be proud of him if he were my son," he said.

Conlon's opinion was typical of a country where thousands of streets and pubs are named for the royal family. Polls published earlier this year showed support for the monarchy at an all-time high, perhaps buoyed by the celebrations surrounding Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee celebrations marking her 60 years on the throne.

Interviews with Londoners up and down the capital's Prince of Wales Road yielded few critics of Harry's antics.

Craig Martin, 38, another construction worker: "He's the prince. He can have any bird he wants!"

Down the road, caregiver Shirley Ashard laughed at the news of Harry's naked adventure, dismissing questions about the propriety of running around a plush hotel room in the buff with a boys-will-be-boys shrug.

"I've got kids. They do things like that," the 59-year-old said. "He's a lad, for God's sake."

WILL HARRY'S ROMP HARM THE IMAGE OF THE PRINCE, OR THE ROYAL FAMILY?

Hanad Darwish, a 19-year-old student from Birmingham, worried about what Harry's hijinks said about his judgment.

"It is a little immature and gives the royals a bad image," he said.

But Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, said it wasn't likely that Harry's reputation would suffer. Seward said his party-boy image was part of his approachable, normal persona.

"Of course it's stupid, but it doesn't make people dislike him ? quite the opposite," she said.

"It shows that he is a guy who gets into trouble and he's the one people love to love. It could only happen to Harry ? but we love him for it."

She did think, though, that Harry might get a talking-to from Prince Charles. "I would think his father would speak to him," she said.

DOESN'T THE ROYAL FAMILY HAVE A HISTORY OF BAD-BOY BEHAVIOR?

Yes, said Anne Sebba, biographer of Wallis Simpson, the American divorcee whose affair with King Edward VIII ? Harry's great-great-uncle ? led to his abdication in 1936.

That king's grandfather, Edward VII ? who reigned from 1901 to 1910 ? had many affairs, parking his carriage outside the houses of his mistresses while he visited.

"The staff would be very discreet," said Sebba. "People knew; they just didn't talk about it."

Edward VIII and Simpson were well known in upper-crust circles for their hedonistic parties ? and some visitors wrote their shocked reactions in diaries.

"It didn't reach the papers," Sebba said. "It is just in the private diaries. Nobody was taking photographs. Nobody was posting it on the Internet.

"The old system depended on incredible discretion, loyalty and deference ? and all that has gone. The royal family has had to make themselves so open and available and this is the downside of the coin."

Prince Harry's office confirmed Wednesday that the photos were of the prince but declined to make any further comment.

WHAT ABOUT THE PRINCE'S PRIVACY?

The blurry, low-resolution photographs appear to have been snapped from inside a hotel suite, and it isn't clear that the prince was aware that they were being taken.

That could be a violation of the royal's privacy. It might also explain why Britain's scandal-hungry tabloids ? normally avid consumers of titillating photos ? were steering clear of the images.

Ashard, the caregiver, said the only outrage she could muster was against the photographer.

"That's out of order," she said. "How would you like it if someone took pictures of you in your hotel room?"

ISN'T SOMEONE SUPPOSED TO BE WATCHING HIM?

Royal protection officers watch over the queen and her family 24 hours a day, 7 days a week ? though they remain firmly on the outside of the bedroom door. So shouldn't someone have been around to make sure this didn't happen? Dai Davies, a former head of royal protection, said it did seem as if someone had let their guard down.

He noted that the past few decades were replete with examples of journalists trying to catch royals in compromising positions.

"There has to be a degree of responsibility and caution," he said. "Surely we have to learn from history. The press love this."

Heart calcium scan most effective in predicting risk of heart disease

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? Heart calcium scans are far superior to other assessment tools in predicting the development of cardiovascular disease in individuals currently classified at intermediate risk by their doctors, according to researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

The test, known as coronary artery calcium (CAC), uses a CT scan to detect calcium build-up in the arteries around the heart. The study findings are presented in the Aug. 22 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Current medical guidelines recommend classifying individuals as high, intermediate or low risk using the Framingham Risk Score (FRS), a cardiovascular risk-prediction model. However, doctors realize that the model isn't perfect and that the intermediate group actually includes some individuals who could benefit from more aggressive drug therapy, as well as individuals who could be managed solely with lifestyle measures.

"We know how to treat patients at low and high risk for heart disease, but for the estimated 23 million Americans who are at intermediate risk, we still are not certain about the best way to proceed," said Joseph Yeboah, M.D., assistant professor of cardiology at Wake Forest Baptist and lead author of the study.

The Wake Forest Baptist study, which was funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health, evaluated which of the top-tier assessment tools best identified people within the intermediate group who were actually at higher or lower risk. Determining the relative improvements in prediction afforded by various tests, especially when used in conjunction with the FRS, could help identify intermediate-risk people who may benefit from more aggressive primary prevention interventions, including the use of aspirin and the setting of lower targets for drug treatment of LDL cholesterol and blood pressure, Yeboah said.

Using data from the NHLBI's Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) study, the researchers did a head-to-head comparison of six top assessment tests for cardiovascular risk prediction in intermediate-risk people: CAC score, ankle-brachial index, brachial flow mediated dilation, carotid intima-media thickness, high sensitivity C-reactive protein and family history of heart disease.

Of the 6,814 total MESA participants from six communities across the country, 1,330 were considered at intermediate risk and were included in this study. The researchers determined that the CAC score proved the best in predicting which among the intermediate-risk people would go on to have heart disease in the ensuing 7.5 years (average) of follow-up observation.

"If we want to concentrate our attention on the subset of intermediate-risk patients who are at the highest risk for cardiovascular disease, CAC is clearly the best tool we have in our arsenal to identify them. However, we have to look at other factors such as costs and risks associated with radiation exposure from a CT scan before deciding if everyone in the intermediate group should be screened," Yeboah said.

Additional research is needed to explore the costs, benefits and risks of widespread use of CAC screening in people at risk of heart disease, he said.

Andrew Lee Lovering, Ph.D., School of Biosciences, University of Birmingham, has received a 2012 ICAAC Young Investigator Award for his seminal work on the structural biology and biochemistry of the proteins that synthesize and modify cell walls in bacteria. Natalie Strynadka, University of British Columbia, describes the significance of Lovering's work: "his spectacular abilities in structural biology clearly paved the way for our understanding of these important antibacterial targets which are also membrane-anchored, a hurdle that has thwarted literally decades of attempts at previous characterization by many groups worldwide." "His protein structure work has shown how Gram positive bacteria synthesize teichoic acids, how bacterial cell walls are transglycosylated, and how enzymes of predatory bacteria partially degrade bacterial cell walls as they invade prey bacteria," explained nominator Liz Sockett, University of Nottingham.

Lovering obtained his B.Sc. in Biochemistry from Birmingham University, where he also earned his Ph.D. in Biosciences. There he used x-ray crystallography to detail the mechanism of action of two enzymes involved in cancer therapies; one a bacterial nitroreductase used in gene therapy of solid tumors, and the other a target for a cell differentiation approach tackling acute myeloid leukemia.

After graduating from Birmingham University, a postdoctoral position in Strynadka's laboratory at the University of British Columbia introduced Lovering to the subject of antibacterial research. This led to determination of the structures of two monotopic membrane proteins involved in bacterial cell wall synthesis. One of these, S. aureus PBP2, represented the first detailed view of how bacteria catalyze the essential step of peptidoglycan polymerisation, a potentially excellent drug target. The other, S. epidermidis TagF, revealed how the Gram-positive wall polymer teichoic acid is synthesized and may form the basis for the development of antivirulents. The PBP2 publication was chosen as one of the highlights of the year by Science and C&E News.

Since establishing his own research group in 2010, Lovering's focus has shifted to deciphering the molecular basis of bacterial predation by Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus, a phenomenon that may lead to its exploitation as a "living antibiotic". In collaboration with Sockett at the University of Nottingham, this approach has already begun to detail how the invading bacterium modifies the prey cell wall for purposes of niche formation, and also how Bdellovibrio and other bacteria hydrolyze the ubiquitous bacterial second messenger cyclic-di-GMP. "As invited speaker of the 2012 Gordon Conference on Bacterial Sensory Transduction, he described the first ever crystal structure of an HD-GYP bacterial signaling protein," says Sockett.

"Lovering's enthusiasm and fascination with the microbial world is always palpable. His level of insight, profound knowledge of fundamental biochemistry, and ability to see connections that others would have missed never fail to amaze me," summarizes Klaus Ftterer, University of Birmingham. "As he builds his research group it is clear that his work will enlighten our understanding of an unusual microorganism, and his enthusiasm will inspire junior researchers in both the structural biology and microbiology communities."

Strynadka agrees, "he is highly collegial, modest, and a natural teacher. His love of and interest in science is truly infectiousknowledge he loves to share with others. Collectively, I believe him to be a truly exceptional rising star who will continue to make fundamental advances to structural microbiology."

Nurse Jennifer Gallagher, who helped treat victims of the Aurora theater shooting in Colorado, has drowned while on a family vacation in Iowa.

Gallagher, 46, of Denver, went swimming in West Lake Okoboji the night of Aug. 6 and her body was found the next day, according to the Sheriff's Office in Dickinson County, Iowa.

Gallagher, an Ireland native, worked at the University of Colorado Hospital for 13 years and cared especially for a?shooting victim treated in the hospital's neurological intensive care unit, which she helped open. She was among staffers who met with President Barack Obama during his visit two days after the July 20 shooting rampage that killed 12 and wounded 58 at the Century Aurora 16 theater.

The hospital's nursing chief officer, Carolyn Sanders, said Gallagher was a "beloved nurse" who was well known for her ability to connect with people and develop caring relationships with her patients.

Why Travel Insurance Can Be Cheaper Online | Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is generally a very good value, especially when compared to other forms of insurance, as it costs very little but provides tremendous peace of mind when traveling for any reason. The purpose of travel insurance is to provide financial protection for anything that could go wrong on a trip?if hotel reservations suddenly need to be canceled, for instance, travel insurance would pick up the tab. However, most of the people that buy travel insurance policies don?t end up using them. This is the reason that it?s such an inexpensive option, but many buyers aren?t aware of the fact that travel insurance can be even cheaper online.

There are a few reasons for this phenomenon; in general, the biggest is competition. The Internet has led to increased competition among virtually all types of businesses, not just in the travel insurance industry. However, it has had a particularly important impact at leading to cheaper online insurance, because before the Internet, finding a travel insurance policy could be difficult. Dozens of travel insurance companies offer services on the Internet and an easy way to find quotes on new insurance policies. This has led to a great market for buyers. Competition drives down prices and drives coverage limits up. The best way to take advantage of this is to compare a number of travel insurance quotes with aggregation websites?these websites provide multiple quotes for their users, and encourage the insurance companies to offer more competitive rates in order to sign new policies.

Many travel insurance companies try to offer good deals online to intrigue casual shoppers through ads on travel websites or search engines. This also helps to make travel insurance cheaper online; the large number of special deals and promotions online keeps average costs down for all customers. However, it?s important to carefully read through any specially priced travel insurance policy, as inexpensive insurance may have special limitations or low limits, effectively making the travel insurance policy less valuable.

If you?re interested in buying travel insurance, it?s to your advantage to look online before visiting a local travel insurance agency. Study quotes and make sure that you?re getting a policy with an ample amount of coverage. Consider the cost of each policy, but also the reputation of the company offering it and the language in the policy contract itself. You can learn more about each insurance company and coverage types with a quick search engine search and by looking at travel insurance websites. Travel insurance can be cheaper online, and reading about your options is a great way to take advantage of this fact.

PFT: Wilson looks good again for Seahawks

Brandon Pettigrew, Scott Fujita, T.J. WardAP

As Judge Helen G. Berrigan tries to sift through conflicting submissions regarding a specific factual question she raised last week with the parties in the bounty cases, there?s one important point to keep in mind regarding the affidavit from Browns linebacker Scott Fujita.

Its contents mesh with statements Fujita made during a June interview with the Associated Press.

In his affidavit, submitted on Friday to Judge Berrigan, Fujita said that he had a telephone conversation with Commissioner Roger Goodell on roughly March 20, 2012.? Fujita testified that Goodell ?told me he would be coming down hard with punishments on the Saints coaches, but that with respect to Saints players, he was not quite sure what he had on them, and that player punishments therefore would take some time.?

If accurate, Fujita?s testimony would refute the claim that Goodell was prepared to discipline the players along with the non-players on March 21, and that Goodell delayed disciplining the players only because the NFLPA had requested the delay.

In June, Fujita mentioned the March phone conversation to the AP, explaining that Goodell said ?he would have no problem coming down hard on Saints coaches, but that when it comes to players, he?s not quite sure what he?s got.?

The only difference comes from the timing.? The AP characterizes, but doesn?t quote, Fujita as claiming the call occurred in ?early March.?? The NFL first disclosed the bounty program publicly on Friday, March 2.

The fact that Fujita gave the same version on two different occasions is hardly dispositive.? But consistency is potentially relevant when trying to sift through differing versions of reality.

Again, we?re not saying anyone has intentionally failed to tell the truth.? Perceptions can be skewed and memories can be faulty.? Here, the point is that the version Fujita gave before the question was raised by the judge meshes with the version he gave after.? Given the importance of the issues and the inevitability of an appeal, it makes sense for Judge Berrigan to conduct an evidentiary hearing, at which time all of the key witnesses would show up and testify regarding their perceptions and memories as to the question of whether Goodell did or didn?t make a decision about player discipline as of March 21.

It?s still not completely clear why that?s even an issue in the litigation.? But the judge made it an issue by asking the parties last week to identify the date on which the NFLPA supposedly asked the NFL to delay reaching a decision as to player discipline.

Hopefully, the delay for getting an answer on whether the bounty suspensions will be upheld won?t last much longer.

mathematica help! union/intersection of 3d plots

I want to do the following:

Say I have 4 RegionPlot3D plots, namely A1 A2 B1 and B2. Each of those four plots are region plots so they occupies some kind of region inside the same 3d space.

First I want to find and display union of A1 and A2, call it A. Then find and display union of B1 and B2, call it B. Lastly, I want to find and display intersection of A and B.

Somethings that I have tried:
1. I can use Show[A1,A2] to graphically find the union of A1 and A2, but after I got A and B. I can't use the Show function to find intersection.

2. I can directly use RegionPlot3D to find intersections of two plots by naming the regions region1 and region2. I can use do RegionPlot3D[region1 && region2....] to do it. But I can't find unions using this method.

3. If my goal is first do intersection, then do union, I can use above two method to do it. But my goal is first do union. So if I use, it doesn't really tell me what region does the union results in, it just displays it.

Remarrying after 50 years, divorced couple always kept in touch ...

While getting remarried to a former spouse might sound out of the question to some people, it still does happen, no matter a person's age. One couple has reportedly remarried, 50 years after they divorced. The couple says they have always kept in touch, maybe because they also had four children together. To the surprise of their children, the couple decided to get remarried on August 4.

During their split, one of them married another person, but when that spouse died, another old relationship sparked. The couple says they are now happy to spend the rest of their lives together, again. When most people think of divorce, they believe the process is ugly and will not end in a friendship with a former spouse.

Although that can happen, this couple shows that couples can still remain respectful during and after a divorce. Speaking with an experienced family law attorney can help a person file for divorce and remain respectful with their soon-to-be ex-spouse during the divorce process. Of course, both people in the relationship have to want to remain friends.

Since this couple was able to maintain a friendship, and later redevelop a relationship, four generations of their families are now celebrating their remarriage. In the event that a couple decides to remarry, a family law attorney can help set up their marriage with protections, and work with them to understand how their legal support for their ex-spouse might change. Understanding the legal process of divorce and remarriage may be beneficial before tying the knot for a second time.

Thyroid cancer risk persists decades after radiation

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who survived the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as children continued to have a higher-than-normal risk of thyroid cancer more than 50 years after radiation exposure, according to a new study.

The thyroid gland, located at the front of the neck, releases hormones that help regulate the body's metabolism. The gland works particularly hard during times of fast growth and development in kids and teens.

Previous studies have shown thyroid cells are particularly vulnerable to ionizing radiation - the kind produced by the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown or the atomic bombings of Japan, for example.

"Thyroid cancer is one of the most radiosensitive cancers," said Dr. Kiyohiko Mabuchi of the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, who worked on the new study.

And, he added, "Younger (thyroid) tissue may be more sensitive to radiation - that's one of the hypotheses."

By tracking new cancer diagnoses in people who were in Japan during the bombings in 1945, and those who were not, Mabuchi and his colleagues found little evidence that adults exposed to the radiation were more likely to develop thyroid cancer later on.

But for kids it was a different story. The researchers calculated that 36 percent of the 191 thyroid cancers that eventually developed in people who were kids or teens at the time of the attacks were likely due to radiation exposure.

The rest would have been expected in a similar, unexposed group.

In total, there were 371 thyroid cancers diagnosed between 1958 and 2005 in about 105,000 atomic bomb survivors, according to findings published in the International Journal of Cancer.

Radiation researcher John Boice from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, said the new study confirms findings from the United States that people remain at higher risk of thyroid cancer for decades after they're exposed to radiation.

"The risk appears to last pretty much your entire life," he told Reuters Health.

That's because thyroid cells are permanently damaged by radiation, he explained - unless the radiation dose is so high that they're killed completely.

"Most people, even scientists, have a misconception that the risk is only a few years and then it goes away," Mabuchi added.

On the other hand, the risk of leukemia - another cancer tied to radiation exposure - is known to peak a few years after the exposure and then return to normal, he said.

The American Cancer Society estimates that about 56,000 Americans will be diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2012, and close to 2,000 will die of the disease.

The researchers agreed that it's not clear whether the findings have implications for kids who were living near the Fukushima Daiichi power plant in Japan, which suffered a meltdown last March following an earthquake and tsunami.

Boice said the Japanese government likely responded quickly enough with evacuations to minimize that risk.

"One of the fortunate things around Fukushima was that the population exposure was extremely, extremely small," said Boice, who wasn't involved in the new paper.

Even among atomic bomb survivors, he pointed out, the risk of thyroid cancer was very low for people who only got a small dose of radiation. "And, it appears around Fukushima and in Japan that the exposures to kids were below a level where there's been any detectable increase (in cancer risk)," Boice said.

Researchers are still calculating radiation exposures after Fukushima. A typical head CT scan delivers about 2 millisieverts (mSv) worth of radiation, compared to 350 mSv and higher exposures among people who were evacuated after Chernobyl. The average dose to survivors of the atomic bombings was somewhere in between, the new study suggests.

Still, Mabuchi said people should not ignore the possible long-term effects of radiation exposure, especially for kids.

That can include medical radiation, such as from CT scans, he said. Though the risk from each individual scan is small, it's not negligible - especially for scans to the head and neck, he added.

Why EMMAPAGE?

EMMAPAGE was established over 30 years ago. In 2001, EMMAPAGE commenced its association with Amway as exclusive distributor for Australia and New Zealand. Together they have created an exciting opportunity for independent business owners and customers.

EMMAPAGE jewellery is specification plated in gold, silver or rhodium. We also have a unisex quality stainless steel range and a contemporary burnished jewellery collection. EMMAPAGE Jewellery features the world's best crystals, raw materials and clasps ensuring both high quality and, with proper care, extended wear.

The EMMAPAGE jewellery collection is an ever changing range, representing the latest international jewellery trends that sweep the catwalks of the world's fashion capitals season after season.

You can be confident that the experienced designers at EMMAPAGE will provide the latest fashion accessory styles and bring you an exciting range seasonally which includes necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings and coordinating accessories for women and men ? perfect to wear, perfect to give and wonderful to receive!

Materials

Rhodium

Rhodium is a hard-wearing material, that is much more expensive than gold. It is very hard so less is needed in the plating process. Rhodium has a more metallic look to it, whereas silver is lighter and brighter. The decision to use rhodium or silver is made by our designers based on the style's look and how hard wearing the particular style needs to be.

Stones
EMMAPAGE stones include Cubic Zirconias, Austrian Crystals and sometimes China stones, which are used in large, statement rings like ASTRAL.

EMMAPAGE also uses Cubic Zirconia Stones in many of its designs. "CZ" as it is known in the trade, is a man made diamond and the most expensive and best quality fashion jewellery stone available.

What are 'China Stones'?
The term China Stones refer to a type of specially toughened glass used in jewellery that uses claws such as rings and pendants.

Pearls
Our pearls look and feel like the real thing. Previously the pearls were coated with 7 layers of pearl essence and baked in the oven 7 times, a process taking 24 hours. Constantly striving to be at the forefront, EMMAPAGE recently employed a world first ? the PP pearl. The Premier Pearl is the highest quality man made pearl and we are the first in the world to use it. To create this beautiful lustre 3 extra coatings of pearl essence have been added and another 24 hours of baking. The PP pearl can be seen in all styles going forward.

Metal

The metal underneath the plating is brass or white metal (normally the necklace and bracelets). The more pure the metal the better it polishes and therefore the surface is smoother. EMMAPAGE Jewellery uses 98% pure base metal.
