capture. create. inspire.: Last Minute Gift Ideas with Epiphany Crafts

The holidays are quickly approaching and I want to share a couple of quick and easy ideas you can use to?put together some last minute gifts using Epiphany Crafts tools and accessories.

First up?is this set of?candle holders. It only takes minutes to make them?with just a few supplies. I wrapped the wire around the candle holder a couple of times and then twisted?the wire around a pencil to curl it- you will want to leave a bit of the wire uncurled for the next step. ?After putting together my photo charms I added them to the wire and formed a small loop?from the remaining wire to secure them in place.

The Epiphany Crafts charms make great mini photo frames for projects like this one, but you could also use patterned papers, stickers, etc. to fill in the charms to match?the home of the recipient.
Supplies:
Epiphany Crafts Round 25 Shape Studio Tool
Epiphany Crafts Round 25 Charm Settings
Epiphany Crafts Round 25 Bubble Caps
Votive Candle Holders/ Candles
26 Guage Silver Wire

My second gift idea also uses the same metal charms to make this fun bookmark. You could create personalized bookmarks for each child (I know my children sometimes tend to disagree about whose bookmark belongs to who) or this would make a great gift for a grandparent or other family member. Again, you could also fill in the charms with patterned papers, stickers, etc. to create a fun gift for the recipient. To make the box I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut the Necklace Jewelry Gift Box by Rivka Wilkins. I needed an insert that would?hold the bookmark so I hand cut one to fit inside the box and hold?the bookmark?in place.

Supplies:
Epiphany Crafts Round 25 Shape Studio Tool
Epiphany Crafts Round 25 Charm Settings
Epiphany Crafts Round 25 Bubble Caps
The Jewelry Shoppe Plain Metal Bookmark
Jumpring
Silhouette Cameo
Necklace Jewelry Gift Box Studio file by Rivka Wilkins

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!

Gulf Arabs demand end to Iran "interference"

MANAMA (Reuters) - A summit of Gulf Arab leaders on Tuesday demanded Iran end what they called interference in Gulf Arab affairs, reiterating the six U.S. allies' long-held mistrust of their regional rival.

A communique issued at the end of a two-day summit of the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) also called on the international community to bring a swift end to massacres and violations of international law in Syria.

"The council expressed its rejection and condemnation of the continuing Iranian interference in the affairs of the Gulf Cooperation Council's states and called on Iran to stop these policies," the statement said.

On Syria, the statement, read out by GCC Secretary-General Abdulatif al-Zayani, added: "We ask the international community for serious and swift moves to stop these massacres and these severe attacks that contradict all religions and international laws and humanitarian principles."

The statement called on the international community "to provide all forms of urgent humanitarian aid" for the people of Syria.

Italy's Monti turns down Berlusconi offer to run

The need to save for retirement is accompanied by plenty of hints. Ads like ING's from a few years ago have neighbors toting around large orange numbers, or simply the word "gazillion" to demonstrate what they thought that their retirement numbers needed to be. Popular authors and academics like Lee Eisenberg, author of The Number, discussed what you'd need in retirement, while in-depth research from William Bengen came out with the 4 percent drawdown as well as, more recently, Wade Pfau's research arguing that even a 4 percent withdrawal rate in retirement might be too risky. ...

In this Monday, Nov. 19, 2012 file photo, Syrian fighters stand on a tank they took after storming a military base in Aleppo. Through mid-2012, rebel power grew and Assad's army ramped up its response. Relentless government shelling leveled neighborhoods and killed hundreds. Regular reports emerged of mass killings by the regime or thugs loyal to it, pushing more Syrians toward armed struggle. The government, which considers the opposition terrorist gangs backed by foreign powers, denied any role, and does not respond to requests for comment on its military. (AP) ? Syrian warplanes on Monday bombed a security building that had been taken over by rebels along the Turkish border, killing at least one person, wounding 20 more and sending dozens of civilians fleeing across the frontier, a Turkish official said.

The conflict also spilled into Syria's eastern neighbor, Lebanon, after Lebanese troops exchanged fire with rebels across the border late Sunday. Violence from Syria's 20-month-old uprising has on several occasions touched neighboring countries, fueling concerns that the Arab Spring's longest and deadliest revolt could touch off a regional war.

The violence came as Russian President Vladimir Putin, a close ally of Damascus, headed to Turkey for talks likely to be overshadowed by the two countries' differences over Syria. Ankara is expected to press Putin to stop backing President Bashar Assad's regime. Moscow has shown no inclination to relinquish its support for its last Middle East ally, whom it has shielded from international sanctions and continued to provide with weapons amid the escalating civil war.

An official from the mayor's office in the Turkish border town of Ceylanpinar said a Syrian jet targeted a security building that had been overrun by rebels, dropping two bombs on an area some 300 meters (yards) from the Turkish border.

Turkish ambulances ferried at least 21 wounded Syrians from the border to Ceylanpinar's hospital, the official said on condition of anonymity in line with Turkish government policy. One of the wounded later died in the hospital, the official said, adding that witnesses in Ras al-Ayn told him more than a dozen people were killed in the bombing.

Television footage from Turkey's Anadolu agency showed a large plume of smoke rising over the town, and dozens of Syrian civilians were also seen fleeing into Turkey after crossing through a barbed wire fence at the border.

Lebanon's state-run National News Agency said that Lebanese soldiers stationed near the village of Qaa in the Bekaa Valley returned fire into Syria after "armed men" shot at them from across the frontier late Sunday. The agency quoted a statement from the Lebanese army that said there were no casualties.

In Syria, activists reported heavy fighting between rebels and regime troops in the southern suburbs of Damascus as the army pressed an offensive to regain lost territory near the capital, including two air bases.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the fighting Monday was concentrated in districts just south of Damascus, including in areas near the airport. The Observatory, which relies on reports from activists on the ground, said there were casualties.

The Damascus suburbs have been opposition strongholds during the 20 months of fighting aimed at toppling Assad. The fighting over the past few weeks in and around Damascus ? the seat of Assad's power base ? has been the most serious in the capital since July, when rebels captured several neighborhoods before a swift government counteroffensive swept them out.

The SANA state news agency said a car bomb detonated near the Engineering College in Aleppo, wounding four people. The report said "terrorists" ? a term the regime uses for rebels ? were responsible for the attack in the northern city that has been a major front in the civil war since the summer.

Also on Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton reiterated President Barack Obama's declaration that Syrian action on chemical weapons was a "red line" for the United States that would prompt action.

Syria is believed to have several hundred ballistic surface-to-surface missiles capable of carrying chemical warheads.

Its arsenal is a particular threat to American allies Turkey and Israel, and Obama singled out the threat posed by the unconventional weapons earlier this year as a potential cause for greater U.S. involvement in Syria's civil war. Up to now, the United States has opposed military intervention or providing arms support to Syria's rebels for fear of further militarizing a conflict.

In Washington, a U.S. defense official said American and allied intelligence officials have detected activity around more than one of Syria's chemical weapons sites in the last week. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about intelligence matters.

He said officials don't believe any developments with the weapons are imminent but are trying to figure out what the Syrians are doing.

More than 40,000 people have been killed since the Syrian revolt started in March last year.

Clinton said the actions of Assad's government have been deplorable, but the use of chemical weapons would bring them to a new level.

"We have made our views very clear: This is a red line for the United States," Clinton told reporters in Prague.

"I'm not going to telegraph in any specifics what we would do in the event of credible evidence that the Assad regime has resorted to using chemical weapons against their own people. But suffice it to say, we are certainly planning to take action if that eventuality were to occur."

Syria's Foreign Ministry denied Damascus has chemical weapons, and said in a statement to Syrian state TV that it would never use them against its own people, even if it had them.

SKorea says US socialite ousted as honorary consul

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea has decided to revoke an honorary title given to an American socialite tied to the scandal involving former CIA director David Petraeus.

A Foreign Ministry official said Monday that Jill Kelley misused her title as South Korean honorary consul. He wouldn't elaborate.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Kyou-hyun as telling reporters in Washington that Kelley used her title for personal gain.

Kelley had complained to an FBI agent about threatening emails she had received telling her to stay away from Petraeus, who once commanded Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. Petraeus knew Kelley from parties and events around Tampa.

Agents tracked the emails to Petraeus biographer Paula Broadwell, who was having an affair with the former general.

Syria rebels say seized key military base near Turkey border

Paula Broadwell had ambitions beyond being the lady who wrote David Petraeus' biography. According to a report in the New York Post's Page 6, Broadwell was trying to leverage her book fame into becoming a TV regular, or an elected official. A source told Page 6 that Braodwell had ambitions of running for office before the scandal broke, but it doesn't say whether it was on a municipal, state or federal level. The interesting note is that she apparently, "had gotten requests from both parties to consider running for office," which, okay. ...

Gazans apply lessons learned from last battle

(AP Photo/Nasser Shiyoukhi)

(AP) ? Sleep away from windows, stock up on food, get the family car off the street ? these are the lessons Gazans have learned in previous rounds of fighting between Israel and the territory's Hamas rulers.

This time, some are adding "change houses" to the list as Israel increasingly targets homes of Hamas activists, making it difficult to guess where missiles might hit. Over the weekend, Israeli airstrikes struck the homes of some two dozen Hamas activists, killing 24 civilians.

For ordinary Gazans, moving sometimes doesn't help.

Pediatrician Sami Dawood moved twice. On Sunday, he evacuated his wife and three children from their high-rise apartment in Gaza City's Tel al-Hawa neighborhood after a missile hit the roof. Fearing Israel would strike the building again, the family moved to the home of his father-in-law near the Palestine Stadium in the center of the city. Early Monday, while the family was asleep, missiles hit the stadium as a suspected rocket-launching site.

"Now we are back home again," said the 40-year-old doctor.

Gaza City housewife Amal Lubbad lives across the street from a house flattened in an airstrike Sunday. The blast, which killed 11 members of the Daloo family, including a Gaza policeman, also blew out the windows of her home.

The 39-year-old Lubbad, her husband and eight children spent a restless night, sleeping on the floor in the room farthest away from the Daloo house, but there was no airstrike.

"We were afraid," she said, adding that the family has nowhere else to go. On Monday, she and her daughters swept up the glass shards as bulldozers in the alley below cleared away the ruins of the Daloo home.

___

Ola Hani, a 31-year-old mother of four, said that since the last Gaza war four years ago, she's kept a week's worth of food and other supplies in her house. "Even in normal days, I don't touch any of it, only when I have a chance to replace it," she said.

Her stash includes canned food, lentils, rice, milk powder, two small radios and candles. Her husband, a banker, is away in Jordan for a training course, and she asked a friend to drive the family car to another friend's yard, to keep it out of harm's way. The Hani family lives in a high-rise and does not have a parking garage.

At a bakery, bank teller Jibril Alawi bought 250 pieces of pita bread for his clan of 35 ? his immediate family and the wives and children of his four brothers who all live in the same building. He said they take turns going on vital errands to minimize exposure to risk.

Like others in Gaza, the Alawis have moved mattresses into inner hallways and rooms away from windows.

Still, sound sleep is impossible in Gaza these days. The massive booms from the airstrikes, often just minutes apart, rattle windows. The wailing of ambulances and the buzz of unmanned spy planes, or drones, make up the background noise.

Hani said she and her children feel scared when they hear the bombardment.

"But a few minutes after that, we start to cheer and laugh when we see another rocket landing in Tel Aviv," she said of attempts by Hamas to strike Israel's main metropolis.

___

Photographers in white lab coats hanging around the emergency room of Gaza's largest hospital, Shifa, are part of a different type of Hamas battle: They are members of a Health Ministry team documenting deaths and injuries in the fighting.

The head of the group, Ashraf al-Kidra, keeps journalists updated with casualty figures ? 106 dead as of Monday evening. In the long term, he hopes the information will serve as the basis for possible international legal action against Israel.

"We learned a lesson from the last war," said al-Kidra, referring to Israel's previous major offensive against Hamas targets in Gaza four years ago. Casualty figures at the time were hotly disputed, with Palestinians saying most of some 1,400 people killed were civilians, while Israel gave a lower figure and said most were militants.

In the chaos at the time, many Israeli attacks were not properly documented, al-Kidra said.

Now, he has two-member teams deployed at each of Gaza's 13 hospitals. They work in 12-hour shifts and update him with each new casualty. Equipped with two mobile phones and a walkie-talkie, the former physiotherapist and acupuncturist says he has barely slept since the offensive began Nov. 14.

One of his team members, Alaa Saraj, made the rounds in Shifa's emergency room Sunday. Amal Mattar, 38, was lying on a gurney, her face cut by shrapnel from an airstrike near her home in Tel al-Hawa, the Gaza City neighborhood. Saraj snapped her picture, and a doctor said she would need six stitches.

___

After more than a decade of on-and-off fighting with Israel, Gazans are not easily shaken.

A warning in Arabic by Israel's military that "Hamas is gambling with your fate and playing with fire," delivered Sunday by briefly taking over the frequencies of local radio stations, elicited mostly amusement.

A group of men hanging around a Gaza City taxi office tried to outdo each other in making fun of the warning. "Let's get some warmth from the fire that Hamas is using to burn us," one of them joked.

Hamas appears to have solid popular support for continued rocket attacks on Israel, despite the new hardships it has brought. Many here expressed satisfaction that Israelis should get a taste of the fear Gazans know so well.

Scenes showing Israelis ducking for cover from rocket fire were discussed with relish, and jokes have popped up on social media, including Facebook. In one, an Egyptian broadcaster with a popular music program asks a listener what he would like to hear. Answer: "The sound of the air raid siren in Tel Aviv."

Ice Wireless, Iristel Conclude Trials for Satellite-based Telephone and Internet in Canada's North

IQALUIT, NU, Nov. 9, 2012 /CNW/ - Ice Wireless and Iristel concluded successful trials this week for a new satellite-based telephone and Internet network to be launched in Canada's North. The new network was first demonstrated October 31, 2012 in Iqaluit to members of the Northern Communications and Information Systems Working Group at a Canadian Department of National Defence meeting to discuss challenges with northern infrastructure.

The trials were conducted using SES AMC-9, a 24 transponder C-band satellite whose footprint comfortably covers Nunavut and which is also capable of covering other rural and remote communities in Canada's North.

"This is the first time anyone has field tested an SES satellite in Canada's North," said Samer Bishay, President of Ice Wireless and Iristel. "What we experienced in Iqaluit was absolutely amazing. Our call quality for our fixed line and mobile phone tests was crystal clear, and we demonstrated broadband Internet speeds of 100 Mbits/s on a 2.4 meter dish, which is just as good, if not better, than any other satellite covering the North today. We are thrilled with the results."

Space and earth segment connectivity will be managed by Juch-Tech, a Hamilton-based earth station whose experience in providing reliable and cost-effective Internet solutions to Africa has convinced the company that Northern Canada has fallen behind many of the world's poorest regions in terms of telecommunications service.

"Juch-Tech has already established satellite connectivity across Africa, so we thought to ourselves, why aren't we doing this in our own backyard?" said Walt Juchniewicz, President of Juch-Tech. "Communication is a fundamental necessity in all our daily lives, and Canada's North has fallen behind the rest of the world. Arctic communities, government departments, Canada's military, emergency response agencies, schools, hospitals and residents all deserve to have better telephone and Internet access."

The successful telephone and Internet trials utilized a broad range of technology and related partnerships, including NovelSat modulation technology, XipLink acceleration performance enhancement technology, and Atop HD video streaming and formatting for GSM/IP-based mobile devices. Onsite support was provided by Coman Arctic, a logistics company based in Iqaluit that has worked with Ice Wireless for the past two years to bring competitive telecommunication services to Nunavut.

In light of the successful telephone trials, Ice Wireless is now moving ahead with its roll out of 3G service to Iqaluit in Summer 2013, which will include download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. At the same time, Iristel plans to expand its CLEC footprint to offer a range of telephony services including fixed line home telephone and long distance services.

Jindal: Liking people is key to expanding GOP tent

FILE - This July 27, 2012 file photo shows Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal speaking in Hot Springs, Ark. The Grand Old Party needs to get with the times. That's according to many Republicans who talked of the party's challenges following the GOP's electoral shellacking. (AP Photo/Danny Johnston, File)

(AP) ? Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal says the Republican Party needs to go back to basics to attract the broad coalition of voters credited with putting President Barack Obama back in the White House.

Kindergarten basics.

"If we want people to like us, we have to like them first," Jindal said on Fox News Sunday.

Former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez has a more nuts-and-bolts approach to bringing in some of the largest and fastest growing groups of Americans: He's forming a super PAC to support Republican candidates who back comprehensive immigration reform, including legalizing the status of an estimated 11 million immigrants in the U.S. without authorization.

The 2012 elections drove home trends that have been embedded for years in the fine print of birth and death rates, immigration statistics and census charts. Nonwhites made up 28 percent of the electorate this year, compared with 20 percent in 2000, with Hispanics comprising much of that growth. Obama captured a commanding 80 percent of the growing ranks of nonwhite voters in 2012, just as he did in 2008. Republican Mitt Romney won 59 percent of non-Hispanic whites, and although he dominated among white men ? outperforming 2008 nominee John McCain among that group ? he couldn't win.

Republicans have spent much of the time since the election wrestling with ways to appeal beyond their base of white men and married women. Nonetheless, in a conference call to big donors last week, Romney credited Obama's win to "extraordinary financial gifts from government" he said the president gave groups in his base coalition: Latinos, African-Americans and young people.

Both Jindal and Gutierrez backed Romney's bid for the White House, but distanced themselves from his post-election comments.

Jindal, the incoming chair of the Republican Governors Association and a potential presidential candidate in 2016, on Sunday said slighting people simply isn't good politics.

"You don't start to like people by insulting them and saying their votes were bought. We are an aspirational party," he said.

Jindal said the Republican Party needs to convince voters it is the party of the middle class and upward mobility. Its conservative principles "are good for every single voter" and it "has to campaign for every single vote," he added.

"We also don't need to be saying stupid things," Jindal said, referring to GOP Senate candidates in Missouri and Indiana who lost their races after comments about rape that were widely criticized.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, the GOP group's incoming vice chair, said also on Fox News Sunday that governors are key to bringing a diversity of voters to the GOP. Thirty states have elected Republican governors, an indication that "the trust factor is there."

"We've got a message that works for young people, that works for people who come to our country from other countries, and, basically for anyone who wants to live their piece of the American dream," Walker said. "I think that starts with our governors as great messengers."

Gutierrez, who served under President George W. Bush, said the country cannot grow without immigrants and the Republican Party is a natural home for them.

"We are the party of prosperity, of growth, of tolerance," Gutierrez said in remarks taped Friday for CNN's "State of the Union." ''These immigrants who come across, and what they do wrong is risk their lives, and they come here and they work because they want to be part of the American dream. That is what the GOP is."

Gutierrez said he is working with Charlie Spies, who created the largest super PAC supporting Mitt Romney, Restore Our Future, on a super PAC to back candidates that support "a path, a process for legalization of workers who are here undocumented."

"First they have to be legalized," Gutierrez said. "Then you have to find a way to get into a line for the green card. ... There will be requirements. And we'll have to negotiate some sort of requirements."

Gutierrez said Republicans for Immigration Reform is about people from all over the world, including Hispanics, Asians, West Africans and Ethiopians.

"If we get this right... the 21st century is ours," Gutierrez said, referring to the GOP. "If we get it wrong, shame on us."

HIV-Positive Women Benefit from Human Papillomavirus Vaccination

Doctors don't usually advise young women infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, to have the vaccine for human papillomavirus. The thinking is that these women, who are already sexually active, probably have already been exposed to HPV. Therefore, the vaccine is unlikely to do any good.

That approach may be a mistake, according to research published in the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes. ?In the study of HIV-positive women, researchers found that many are not infected with some of the most serious strains of HPV and could still benefit from vaccination.

HPV is the most common sexually transmitted virus. There are many strains of HPV, but four -- types 16, 18, 6 and 11 -- are linked to the development of disease. Types 19 and 19 account for about 70 percent of all cervical cancers while types 6 and 11 cause 90 percent of cases of genital warts. The vaccine protects against those four strains and is recommended for girls before they become sexually active, ages 11 through 26.

MORE: HPV Vaccine Benefits Those Who Do and Don't Get the Shots

The new study, by Dr. Jessica A Kahn, an associate professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, examined 99 HIV-positive women ages 16 to 23 receiving their first HPV vaccination. She found that 75 percent of the women had an existing HPV infection with at least one type, with 54 percent testing positive for a high-risk type. However, when examining the two types that cause 70 percent of cervical cancers (HPV-16 and HPV-18), the researchers found that nearly half of the women had no existing infection with either type and showed no evidence of exposure to them.

"Health care providers may hesitate to recommend HPV vaccines after a girl starts having sex," Kahn says. "However, our results show that for a significant number of young women, HPV vaccine can still offer benefits. This is especially important in light of their HIV status, which can make them even more vulnerable to HPV's effects."

MORE: Doctors Urge HPV Vaccine for Boys

Protection against developing cervical cancer is especially important in these women, she notes, because HIV status increases the risk of cervical cancer and makes it harder to treat.

HPV vaccination has only been available for about six years, and knowledge on the benefits of the ?three-shot series is still emerging. Another study, published this week in the Journal of Infectious Diseases found a significant decrease of HPV prevalence in Australia since that country implemented widespread vaccination.

Women ages 18 to 24 were examined with Pap screening throughout the country in the two years (2005-07) before vaccination became available and in the two years after (2009-10). There was a 20 percent overall decrease in genital HPV prevalence and a whopping 77 percent decrease in the targeted strains -- types 6, 11, 16 and 18 -- following the advent of? the vaccine program.

MORE: HPV Vaccine Found to Have Minimal Side Effects

Moreover, HPV was detected in only 5 percent of vaccinated women in the post-vaccine era compared to 15.8 percent in unvaccinated women in the post-vaccine era and 28.7 percent of women in the pre-vaccine years.

Question: Do you think enough people who are eligible for the HPV vaccine get the shots? Tell us what you think in the comments.

Obama-Boehner 'fiscal cliff' handshake: Could it actually hold?

After a friendly meeting on the ?fiscal cliff?, President Obama shook hands with House Speaker John Boehner. Maybe it?s the holiday spirit, but there?s cautious optimism that bipartisanship might not be dead in Washington after all.

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff writer / November 17, 2012

President Barack Obama acknowledges House Speaker John Boehner at the White House in Washington Friday as he hosted a meeting of the congressional leadership to discuss the deficit and the economy.

Fresh from reelection, President Obama met Friday with leaders of an unpopular Congress, including House Speaker John Boehner, to discuss how to avoid leaving the most powerful country in the world hanging like Wile E. Coyote off a ?fiscal cliff.?

It was the first such powwow in six months. And as it broke up and members headed out of town for Thanksgiving, Mr. Obama and Mr. Boehner reached across the table for a warm handshake ? a brief grip that seemed to encapsulate an electorate?s cautious hope that a polarized government could strike a deal that raises revenues while downsizing entitlement programs and other spending that have begun to threaten the nation?s solvency.

So, will ? can ? that ?fiscal cliff? handshake hold?

To be sure, the reelection of President Obama sent a powerful message to Republicans, who for the first time since a tea party wave in 2010 yanked the House into a staunch antitax position felt they had room to take a different tack from the corrosive 2011 debt limit standoff that created a set of automatic spending cuts to take effect Jan 1. Along with the looming end to the Bush tax cuts, those spending cuts comprise the ?fiscal cliff? that some fear could plunge the country into recession, or worse.

On the other hand, the election gave Democrats more a deadline than a mandate, a sort of affirmation that Obama?s legacy could well ride on his handling of America?s rough-idling economy.

RECOMMENDED:?Could 'fiscal cliff' push US into recession? Four questions answered.

A lot is at stake over the next few days as staffers begin to work out the details of the outline that Congressional leaders said they agreed to.

For now at least, President Obama is holding to his demand that families earning more than $250,000 chip in more taxes, which he says could bring in $1.6 trillion over the next 10 years.

Speaker Boehner says Republicans are willing to consider additional revenues. Whether he meant new taxes remains unclear. But on its face, the statement indicated a change from the summer of 2011, when a majority of Americans concluded that tea party Republicans were actively seeking gridlock in order to force Democrats toward spending cuts.

?To show our seriousness, we?ve put revenue on the table as long as it?s accompanied by significant spending cuts,? said Boehner.

Commenting on a recent Washington Post-Pew Research poll that shows 53 percent of Americans leaning toward blaming Republicans again if Congress can?t strike a deal with Obama, columnist Froma Harrop notes that, ?Understanding this, thoughtful Republicans are feeling freer to risk the tea partyers? wrath and cooperate with Democrats. The teams may disagree on much, but at least they?re now playing in the same ballpark.?

Texas trucker released from Mexican prison

A Texas truck driver who says he made a wrong turn into Mexico with a trailer full of ammunition has been released from prison but remains in the custody of immigration authorities, U.S. officials said Friday.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico said that 27-year-old Jabin Bogan was freed from a maximum security prison in the state of Veracruz. It did not say why immigration authorities were holding him, or when he is expected to return to the U.S., but Bogan likely is accused of violating immigration rules when he entered Mexico.

Bogan's family and lawyers declined to comment. He had faced up to 30 years in prison on an ammunition trafficking charge, but the judge reduced the charge to possession of ammunition after testimony from Mexican customs agents contradicted prosecutors' claim that Bogan hid 268,000 bullets under floorboards.

Bogan's mother, Aletha Smith, has told The Associated Press that the truck driver had been ordered to pay a fine in order to be released.

Bogan crossed from Texas into Juarez, Mexico, on April 17.

Agents testified in June that Bogan was trying to make a U-turn back into the U.S. when they found the ammunition bundled on top of wooden pallets inside the trailer.

Since then, Bogan's lawyers and family in the U.S. have cried foul, saying the ammunition charge was too hefty for what they claim was an honest mistake.

Bogan had made two deliveries in El Paso, Texas, and said he was supposed to drive to Phoenix to deliver assault rifle ammunition to a wholesaler there when he got lost. He said he took a wrong exit on the freeway and drove toward the border, where he said a law enforcement official told him to continue driving across the bridge. Bogan said that when he realized he had crossed into Mexico, he attempted to turn back, but the layout of the traffic lanes prevented him from returning without first crossing into the truck inspection area in Juarez.

Bogan's attorneys have said surveillance footage taken at the border crossing shows Bogan blocking several lanes of southbound traffic for more than half an hour while trying to maneuver his 18-wheeler back to U.S. soil.

Mexican prosecutors alleged he tried to clandestinely smuggle bullets commonly used by drug cartels.

Samsung Galaxy Camera review: a 21x compact shooter brought to life by Android

Samsung Galaxy Camera review

There were no heckles, boos or crickets for Samsung's reps back at IFA. But it's fair to say that the atmosphere following its unveiling of the Galaxy Camera was as muted as it was polite. It didn't help that most journalists in that meeting room were there primarily to see the Galaxy Note II, which was undoubtedly the show's headline act. It was also worrisome that Nikon had recently released a half-hearted Android camera of its own -- the Coolpix S800c running on lowly Gingerbread. And finally, some folks in the room -- ourselves included -- may have been put off by Samsung's talk of "convergence," in reference to the fact that the Galaxy Camera has a micro-SIM slot for HSPA+ cellular data. After all, the whole notion of converged hardware has lost the sheen it once had. Hybridized, perhaps. Modular, maybe. But please, not a camera-phablet.

Here's the thing, though: the Galaxy Camera is not a converged device. It's a camera, plain and simple. It just happens to be one that's hooked up (in a multitude of ways) to the glorious world of Android. More specifically, we're looking at full-throttle Jelly Bean sitting astride the same optically stabilized 21x zoom lens and almost half-inch 16-megapixel sensor that have already been deployed in Samsung's WB850F WiFi camera. These are components which far exceed anything you'd find in even the most image-conscious smartphone. If you want to put a label on it, it's probably more meaningful to describe all this as software convergence. The same OS and cloud-connected apps that have so radically transformed phones, tablets and TVs are now also being deployed in a camera -- and there's no reason why they shouldn't be just as invigorating in this new role. At the very least, don't dismiss this device as a curiosity until you've read our take on it.
